Things to do in Ashington, Northumberland

Ashington was once known as one of the main places for coal mining being in the center of it all in the North East. Since it’s coal mining days Ashington has grown in size now being one of the biggest towns in Northumberland.

Ashington is located upon the River Wansbeck separating Ashington from Stakeford and the Guidepost area. Only a few miles east you will find the seaside town of Newbiggin by the sea; to the west Morpeth and north Lynemouth.

Although the coal mines in Woodhorn, Ashington closed some years ago there is an excellent museum, Woodhorn Museum, that gives visitors a true taste of what it was like to mine and live in a mining village.

The Woodhorn Museum sits adjacent to the QE2 Country Park where visitors can take a short mini train journey to the other side of the country park around a stunning lake. This leads onto Brewers Faye a great place to grab a bite and enjoy the views.

Ashington main street consists of many shops, places to eat and places to grab a nice cup of coffee.

A new addition to Ashington is its new leisure center facility sporting a modern full-size pool, state of the art gym, exercise classes, library, kids soft play and an eating area.

If you are looking to take a walk around a wooded area in Northumberland then look no further than the Ashington Community Woods. The Ashington Community Woods is only a short walk from Ashington main street and covers a large 135 hectares of woodland area.
