St Cuthbert’s Cave, Northumberland

St Cuthbert’s Cave otherwise known as Cuddy’s Cave can be found hidden in the Northumberland countryside near Belford in the Klyoe Hills. It has become a favourite spot to visit for walkers and those looking to get out and about and see the hidden gems of Northumberland.

The spectacular sandstone cave is said to be a place of rest for monks carrying St Cuthbert’s body, a seventh-century Anglo-Saxon monk and also a bishop, from Lindisfarne to Durham Cathedral.

Visiting St Cuthbert’s Cave

There is a National Trust car park located at Holburn Grange Farm, Belford where it is free to park your vehicle in order to visit the cave. The car park is 5 – 10 minutes drive from the A1. Once turning off the A1 onto the country roads look out for a wooden sign saying ‘St Cuthbert’s Cave’. Next follow the small narrow road along to the car park.

Once parked there is a wide grassy path to follow up to the top of the hill where spectacular views of the Cheviots can be seen. You will also need to go through the gate at the top of the hill and turn right. This has the sign ‘St Cuthbert’s Cave one-quarter of a mile’.

The following section of the walk is a short woodland, forestry area and should only take a short amount of time to walk through the trees forward then left up to the cave area.

Whilst walking through the woodland area you will get your first glimpse of St Cuthbert’s Cave. Follow the path from here up to the magical spot and take in the beauty of this hidden Northumberland location.
