Chillingham Castle, Northumberland

Located inside the Village of Chillingham within the northern part of Northumberland, the Chillingham Castle is a medieval castle that was occupied before the the Grey and Bennet families from the 15th century until the 1980s. It eventually became a home to Sir Humphry Wakefield Bt., and his family.

The castle is originally built in the 12th century as a monastery. This castle is very rich in heritage and history as the late King Edward I stayed there in 1298 before leading a battle against the Scottish army led by William Wallace. Being located between two feuding nations, the castle was a witness in different events that transpired throughout the years. During the second world war, the castle served as a barracks for the army.

A large park enclosed within its grounds was laid and built by Sir Jeffrey Wyatville in the 19th century, and its layout was mainly inspired with an Italian design.

When visiting the castle, you can either opt for exploring the surroundings by taking a stroll or stay within the holiday apartments that are available for renting. A few parts of the castles are also open for visitors to enter and explore.
