Berwick Town Walls, Northumberland

Built as a form of defensive structure around the town of Berwick-upon-Tweed, England, the Berwick Town Walls, also known as the Berwick Elizabethan Town Walls, is one of the most famous piece of architecture that is still standing and preserved throughout the whole country. The construction of these defensive walls dates back to 1558 and was made in order to block the invading Scots who always claimed that the land was theirs.

The entire wall is actually two miles long but in the current years, it was reduced to one mile and a quarter in length. It has four gates to enable people to go in and out of the town. It is also said that these walls were the most expensive structure built during England’s Golden Era. The design of the walls was inspired by Italian architecture.
